Tomazs Gudzowaty is an exceptional personality. As a human being as well as photographer. Decorated with prestigious international awards, he appears as though he is not seeking publicity. He doesn't make public appearances, doesn't personally negotiate his commissions and exhibitions, doesn't answer his phone or deals with his correspondence. He seems to enjoy his anonymity – evidently on purpose – which allows him to fully concentrate on his unusual photographic projects. They are at first created in his head, after a lot of thinking. He carefully considers the visual possibilities of his ideas, and he tries to use these possibilities – including those offered by photographic technique – to the maximum. The impressiveness of his projects comes from the very interesting content interpreted in a highly interesting pictorial form. Part of the success of his pictures is undoubtedly the fact that Gudzowaty thinks even after he finishes taking his pictures: he selects the right photographs and puts them in the right sequence so that what he wants to say is understandable, rich in content and emotionally strong. It comes as no surprise that he tries to stay in the background – his method of working is very demanding. He always selects and photographs his subjects DIFFERENTLY.
Tomasz Gudzowaty (1971) graduated in law from Warsaw University but since childhood his main interest was photography, especially classical black and white humanitarian photography. For years he was interested in social documentary but more recently he's became interested in non-commercial, atypical and even exotic sports that aren't in the mainstream and do not attract media interest. And it is precisely his pictures, which quickly elevate the popularity of these sports and media interest. Gudzowaty publishes in Max magazine, L'Equipe, The Guardian, Newsweek, Time, Forbes, British Journal of Photography, and others. He's the author of several photographic books, winner of multiple awards in important international competitions – World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year, NPPA Best of Photojournalism. He works with Focus agency in Hamburg and Yours Gallery in Warsaw. He exhibits around the world.
